American Idol Audition Video # 5 - Wishing You Were Somehow Here again from "Phantom of the Opera"

Hey Everyone!
Thanks so much for all your comments. Seriously, this has been SO incredibly helpful! It was to fun to see the mixed reviews on "Shot Through the Heart." It seems like it's a sort of Love it or Hate it kind of song!
I also wanted to mention that I haven't really been practicing these songs for years and years - so as your comment come in I'll probably re-post some of the songs to see if there has been any improvements based on YOUR suggestions.
Also, I found out that there is TV show called, "America's Got Talent" and that you can go on there an sing anything - even opera. So, I might look into trying out for that show too! Thanks to our awesome clients/friends Phil & Reese for mentioning that!

Okay, here is Wishing You Were Somehow Here Again from, "The Phantom of the Opera."

My favorite, out of all the songs you've posted. Here's why:

- It's a beautiful song!

- Not too too classical. Therefore, more mainstream and has a recognizable melody that can be followed.

- It suits your voice style best. While I liked the Bon Jovi song and think you did a great job, your voice paired with song seems like a happier union.

That's my opinion, for all it's worth. Now let me get Ryan to watch and comment for you. He's the one with the musical talent (and discerning ear) in the family! =)

Hey Anna,

I have to admit that I forgot how good your voice is! Maybe we can get together and do some more Christmas songs this year, or at least O Holy Night again. Michael will probably make me transpose it up a few steps so you can shatter some glass.

Wishing You Were Somehow Here Again is an excellent choice. I think you definitely need to walk the fine line between classical/opera and pop. Too poppy, and you sound very Broadway, which I think they avoid. Too opera, and you sound too good for American Idol (sad, but true). I think you'll have your best shot if you position yourself as the tear-jerker, and you really do excel at those ballads.

Although I love Ave Maria, I suspect less people are familiar with it than you think. And although I love your rendition, I too worry that something that un-pop might kill your chances.

May I suggest 'Time to Say Goodbye'? This another modern crossover that is loved in the mainstream.

Just look at this cheesiness:

How could that not get you onto American Idol?

Forgot to mention my other suggestion: "One Day I'll Fly Away" by Joe Sample (sung by Nicole Kidman in Moulin Rouge). Joe's one of my own personal idols as one of the best jazz pianists alive, but I don't watch American Idol, so I don't know if it's already been done to death on that show.

Anna, there is no doubt that you have a gorgeous voice. I could listen all day. I also love this song over all the others, but not because the others were bad, I just think you're getting more comfortable and relaxing. I'd love to see you connect more with the camera, but that's just a minor thing. Can't wait to hear more songs from you. :)

best,
Juliet

Anna, your voice is beautifully suited for songs like these. I really liked rjkirk's suggestions for songs. Go with something like that....you can totally pull it off. I'm rooting for you already!

On a side note, I miss you!

I agree with Ryan. I agree with a lot of the comments; especially about working the jazz angle. I think that it would totally stand out. I think that you are sounding more and more comfortable, which is making you sound better and better. I think "Someday I'll fly away" is an inspired choice. I really hope you consider it. I think you would kill it.

Wait, I changed my mind... THIS is my favorite. You completely nailed this song! Incredible!

How funny that you mentioned Phantom of the Opera when I was driving you back to the hotel, however you failed to mention this. ;)

Anyway, you have my vote!
