American Idol Video # 7 - I Can't Make You Love Me

For this video I chose to sing "I Can't Make You Love Me" which is actually more of a country/pop song. (Thanks Erin Harvey for continually encouraging me to sing Country! This is for you! :)
I have heard a variety of people sing this, however, including George Michael so it can be a interchangeable song for sure.
I want to make note that I don't even attempt to do runs like you would normally hear in pop and country. I think I just sound really lame when I try to do that. Does it not translate without the runs? Also, I feel like my voice has too much vibrato. But I kind of rely on my vibrato make things sound good, but I don't want to come off to Musical Theatre. What do you guys think?

Yay! I'm so glad to see you went country. Fabulous song choice =) I LOVE this song and it is so ingrained in my mind the way it was originally done. I actually think your vibrato went beautifully with the song. My only criticism is that it felt that some parts were a little rushed so you could get to your shining vibrato moments. Oh and I guess they don't speak with much of a twang out in Cali, hehe. Thank you so much for humoring me and I am curious to hear other feedback. =)

Hey Anna, I like your voice how it is on this song! It doesn't sound musical theater at all to me. Bonnie Raitt's got the smooth voice version of this song covered, so I say do it your own style.

I agree that it sounds like you're completely skipping the 4th beat of many measures of this song. As much as I hate metronomes, I think it would help you on this one to keep strict 4/4 time.

The only other thing I can think of is dynamics -- maybe starting off a little more quietly so you can build up? Actually now that I think about it, that might apply to a few of your songs. But then again, I tend to prefer very dramatic dynamics, so that could be me.

your voice is beautiful. obviously. i notice that you rush it and your pitch tends to be a bit sharp. my constructive criticism: slow down and relax. go too slowly if need be. smoke a bowl... drink a glass of wine... whatever it takes to take the edge off and loosen up! with a voice as lovely as yours, all you need to do is feel the music and let it fall out.

good luck!
